The Nordic Back Extension V3 (NBE V3) is the newest version of the well-known Nordic bench from Tib Bar Guy. If you know me, you know the NBEV2 is one of my absolute favorite machines, which has helped me build strong hamstrings and a 12-rep max Nordic Curl.
At first glance, it looks almost identical to the V2, but after testing it over at The Tib Bar Guy’s Headquarters, the small upgrades actually make a noticeable difference.
This article breaks down:
What changed from V2 → V3
Build quality & usability
Exercises you can perform
Who it’s best for
Whether it’s worth upgrading
Quick Verdict
The NBE V3 isn’t a complete redesign, but rather a refinement. Every change improves workflow, durability, and day-to-day use rather than reinventing the machine.
If you already own the NBE V2, this won’t feel like a major upgrade. The training experience is largely the same, so I’d recommend sticking with the V2.
For those new to the Nordic Back Extension, however, the V3 is absolutely the version to get. The small improvements add up and make it the best iteration of the machine so far.
Nordic Back Extension V3 Features & Upgrades
While the V3 looks similar to the V2, every change targets usability, durability, and setup speed. None of these are flashy but together they noticeably improve the day-to-day experience.
Sleeker Design
The V3 has a cleaner look with blacked-out knobs and refined finishing. Performance stays the same, but it feels more like commercial equipment. I have always been a fan of all blacked out equipment, and I feel that the Garage Gym Commun ity also enjoys that. Thge new sleek design will definitely turn heads.
Adjustment Indicator
A built-in angle window shows the Nordic incline level. This means no guessing or memorizing holes. A nice upgrade from the NBE2.
Upgraded Foam Rollers
New molded foam rollers with high-density commercial-grade vinyl and stitching improve comfort and durability, especially during exercises like Bulgarian Split Squats. The NBEV2 already felt great, but with this improvement, you’ll definitely feel a difference with the NBEV3.
Knurled Front Handle
A knurled transport handle makes moving the bench around your gym or clinic much easier. Another small but good upgrade. It gives the bench a more “premium feel”.
Dedicated Lift Handle
A specific lifting point underneath allows for a more comfortable way to reposition the NBEV3. This handle sits just under the machine on the same side of the adjustment knobs, and is positioned where, naturally, I would lift the bench.
Dedicated Adjustment Handle
A separate handle makes raising and lowering the top pad when changing from Nordics to Back Extensions. With the NBE V3, there was no dedicated handle, so you’d have to find your own way to position your hand. This fixes that problem.
Knurled Adjustment Handle
Improves grip when adjusting lower angles like 10°. This is a very simple improvement, one that I wouldn;t care much for, but it does feel nice.
Commercial Grade Knobs
Stronger knobs improve stability and make pad adjustments faster.
Larger Single-Piece Foot Plate
More foot space and easier installation. The NBE V2 foot plate had a two-piece design, which added extra time to installation. With the NBE V3, the footplate is now a single piece, making installation easier and improving stability during Nordics and back extensions.
Upgraded Guide Rails
Pads slide more smoothly and are easier to remove for hip extension setups, speeding up exercise transitions.
New Adjustable Band Pegs
The new band pegs now allow for the use of bands to add more resistance to exercises. These are great for
Resisted Nordics
Resisted Back extensions
Back Extension Height Indicator
Let’s you repeat the exact setup every session by giving you a clear indicator of what adjustment level you’re using.
Laser-Etched Indicators
Clear markings that won’t wear off over time. Simple. Nice upgrade.
Lengthened Split Squat Bar
More foot room during split squats for better positioning and comfort. A minor complaint some people had was that split squats were challenging because their feet hit the top pad. This fixes the issue.
Stronger Storage Magnet
Keeps the unit securely together when stored upright.
Permanent Feet
Attached feet prevent lost parts and improve long-term durability.
Overall:
Individually small upgrades leading to a collectively smoother, quicker, and more reliable machine.

Why Nordic Curls Matter (From a Physical Therapist & Strength Coach)
The biggest benefit of this machine is training the hamstrings in a lengthened position using Nordic Curls.
You can adjust the angle from 45° incline → flat, all while still moving through a full range of motion at every angle.
That means you’re strengthening the hamstrings in the exact position they commonly tear, during the eccentric phase.
Benefits
Hamstring strain prevention
Sprint performance
Deceleration control
Return-to-sport rehab
ACL injury reduction strategies
For sports involving running, cutting, and jumping, eccentric hamstring strength is one of the strongest protective factors we have.
Build Quality & Daily Use
The NBE V3 feels closer to commercial equipment than typical garage gym gear.
What stands out most:
Fast adjustments
Stable at all angles
Easy to move
Smooth transitions between exercises
Comfortable under high tension
V2 vs V3 — Should You Upgrade?
Keep the V2 if:
You already own it
Rarely use bands
Adjustments don’t bother you
Get the V3 if:
You don’t own one yet
You run a clinic
You train athletes
You care about band pegs
Who It’s Best For
Ideal for
Strength coaches
Physical therapists
Athletes
Garage gym owners are serious about training
Those interested in hamstring injury prevention
Looking for a way to train hamstrings other than hinging movements
Not ideal for
Casual users who won’t train Nordics consistently
Final Thoughts
The Nordic Back Extension V3 is a solid machine that opens up a variety of exercises without requiring tons of equipment. It provides a dedicated Nordic curl, back extension, split squat, and hip thrust setup all in one, while also allowing tons of new exercises with a small footprint. In my opinion, it’s the staple machine for trainig Nodic Curls.
The improvements enhance:
Adjustment speed
Comfort
Stability
Exercise versatility
Because Nordic curls are one of the most evidence-supported hamstring injury prevention exercises available, having equipment that makes them easier and more repeatable matters.
Bottom line:
If you want a dedicated posterior chain machine for strength and rehab, this is one of the best options currently available.
